Maths

At Sauncey Wood we strive to ensure that every child is successful and feels confident manipulating and working with number, shape and space and data. We use White Rose as our main curriculum and supplement this with HfL fluency work. We believe that successful mathematicans are produced by planning for daily, small incremental steps of progression. We plan lessons that build upon the previous learning and aim for children to master mathematical concepts in a variety of ways to develop a truly secure understanding of mathematics.

Our maths lessons

Maths is all around us and at Sauncey Wood we plan multiple opportunities for maths in the Early Years. Activities are planned for the children to access independently or with an adult. We use both inside and outside space to give children a sense of how maths is truly all around us and use their interests to help develop mathematical skills.

Reception, Year 1 and 2 also use the Mastering Number programme from NCTEM which aims to consolidate number sense. It teaches the children to be flexible with number which gives them a great foundation when starting to reason with number higher up in the school

Across the school, we use the CPA approach. This is starting with the concrete (using apparatus such as base ten, counters and bead strings), pictorial (using pictures and models to represent the maths) and finally the abstract (working with numbers ad symbols). This helps our children visualise and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts and supports their reasoning skills. CPA approach in maths

In Key Stage 2, we continue to use the CPA approach to plan our lessons and tasks, ensuring that children are not just rote learning skills, but rather developing their understanding of key concepts and making links between topics and ideas. We do this by using investigations, ‘deep’ questioning and regular assessment to check understanding.
