Welcome to Year 5

Year 5 is taught by Mr. Wilson and the teaching assistant is Mrs. Ramdani. Children in Year 5 take on important roles at Sauncey Wood as we encourage them to take an active role in school life. Children have the chance to become prefects and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors and will take part in the end of year show with the Year 6 children.

In English, we will continue to use Herts Essential Writes to plan and write some fantastic pieces of work that cover a range of genres. Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation (SPaG) will take high priority in Year 5 and increasingly complex sentence structures will be taught and used. Reading texts will become more challenging and children will be taught comprehension skills that will support them in understanding these texts. Well-chosen texts that inspire and engage the children will continue to develop a love of reading!

In Maths, the children will continue to develop their maths skills by problem solving. They will be taught how to make mathematical links between topics and use this knowledge to apply their skills to complex problems. Fluency will be taught every day and this will support the children’s use of mental strategies.
