General information on day to day things
School opens at 08:45 and ends at 15:15 with lunch for Key Stage One from 12.00 – 13:00 and 12:10 - 13:10 for Key Stage Two.
All children have a morning break from 10:45 – 11:00 with the exception of Early Years.
Key Stage 1 children have a break in the afternoon.
Children are not to be on school premises until 08.30 when the school gates are opened. Parents/carers must wait with their children until 8.45 when the doors open. All children go straight into their classrooms once the doors are open. A member of staff will take messages at the gate. No Parents or Carers are allowed into the school premises via the children's entrance.
Children are NOT allowed on the Play Equipment in either of the playgrounds before or after school and NO BALL GAMES are to be played before or after school.
No bikes or scooters should be ridden on the school premises, your child should push their bike/scooter from the gate. Bikes and scooters should be stored in the racks during the school day. Dogs are not allowed onto the school site and must be tied up away from the gates.
Absence from School
If your child is away from school parents must inform the office by 09:15 on each day of absence – there is an answerphone or email for contact out of school hours. In line with the Health Protection Agency guidelines, please remember that children must not return to school until 48 hours after the last episode of diarrhoea or vomiting. We’d all be grateful if you could follow these guidelines to help prevent anyone else contracting the bug/illness.
Break time snacks should consist of fruit, dried fruit, vegetables or any other healthy snack; NOT crisps, biscuits or, in particular, NUTS- please remember we are a Nut free school. All children in the FS and KS1 receive free fruit and vegetables daily as part of the Government scheme.
It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that the school has up to date contact details for them should they need to be contacted at any time. It is also imperative that parents contact the school if their child has any specific medical needs, to enable a healthcare plan to be completed so staff are aware of any action to take in the event of your child being unwell at school. We use School Gateway to send parents e-mails; please ensure you give the office any new home/mobile telephone numbers and/or e-mail addresses to ensure we are able to contact you if necessary.
If you use a car to get to school could you please park considerately, observe the road markings (no parking on zig zags or double yellow lines) and keep the driveways of the homes of local residents clear. Thank you.

Inevitably some clothing is lost from time to time. Lost property is stored in front entrance. If not claimed after a term we dispose of it.
Medication in school
Some children may require medication from time to time but the only medication that we are allowed to administer is that which has been prescribed by a doctor. Under no circumstances should children bring any other form of medication to school e.g. cough sweets etc. Medicines such as Calpol, Ibuprofen, cough mixture etc are not allowed to be given to children by school staff, unless prescribed.

If your child needs to have prescribed medication administered at school, please come to the Office where you will need to complete the required permission form.
The staff administer this in a voluntary capacity and it is the responsibility of the parents and/or children to remember to come at the appropriate time.
If your child needs medication three times a day the LA recommends this doesn’t come to school but is taken before school, on return home from school and before bed (unless it is essential to be taken before food at lunchtime).
Some children will have specific medical needs and will have an individual medical plan drawn up for them in liaison with the School Nurse.
Inhalers are kept with the child in their classroom. It is the responsibility of the parents to inform the school if their child is asthmatic and to ensure the required inhaler are in school and up to date. We send medication home home at the end of each term and it is to come back into school on the first day via the office. Children who require asthma inhalers are not allowed to be in school without one.
We have an ‘Open Door’ policy whereby we hope that parents feel they can come and talk to staff if they have concerns; unless urgent or a quick message, it is better to catch teachers at the end rather than the beginning of the day to either talk with them or make an appointment.
Parents have the opportunity to attend Parents’ Evenings that are arranged in the Autumn and Spring Terms. We run information evenings from time to time, usually on learning or curriculum issues.
A comprehensive Newsletter goes out every other week. This is e-mailed using ParentMail and is also available on the website. Throughout each term you will receive letters/e-mails from class/year group teachers regarding plans for the term, specific events or visits.
All concerns or issues regarding your child should always go through their class teacher in the first instance; most things are resolved this way. It may be necessary to consult the Deputy Head or the Headteacher as appropriate.
Term Time Holidays
Family holidays should be taken during the normal school holiday periods. We strongly discourage families from taking holidays during term-time.
If an absence is unavoidable or there are exceptional circumstances the Headteacher has the discretion authorise term time absences.
Please complete an application form to request an authorised absence - please note that holidays in term-time will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances.
It should be emphasised that any absence during term time disrupts the children’s education, whatever stage they are at within the school.
Accessing the Pupil Premium Funding for Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One children
If you are a parent or carer and you receive one of the benefits listed below, your child may be eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant. This Grant releases extra funding into our school, enabling us to provide additional support for those children in receipt of it. To ensure that the funding is released into school you must register on the Herts Direct Free School Meal Page or phone the number listed below.
Registering is vitally important as it ensures that your child receives the additional support that they are entitled to.
Registering for Free School Meals in Key Stage Two
Children in Key Stage Two are not automatically entitled to a free school meal. If as a parent or carer you receive one of the benefits listed, your child may be eligible for a free school meal and the Pupil Premium Grant. Again the Grant releases extra funding into our school, enabling us to provide additional support for those children in receipt of it. You must register on the Herts Direct Free School Meal Page or phone the number listed below to ensure your child receives a free school meal and to release the funding that enables us to provide the additional support.
Benefits that qualify for the Pupil Premium Grant/Free School Meal
• Income support;
• income-based jobseekers allowance;
• income-related employment and support allowance;
• support under immigration and asylum law;
• the guarantee part of state pension credit;
• child tax credit and you have an annual income of £16,190 before tax or less;
• working tax credit during the 4 week run on period.
* Please note that if you receive both Child Tax Credit and Working Tax Credit we will not be able to claim the pupil premium grant.

Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child's welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with his/her parents/carers first unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child's welfare.
